The Spell of the Blazing Tree

 باللغة الإنجليزية

Saadiah Mufarreh

Thanslated by Mona Fayad

When I’m smiling
It’s only to stop crying
(From an African-American song)

His laugh:

silver

a horse neighing

a fragrance

of warm regret

the calm, noble joy

of horses

scattered in distant

plains

an ecstatic warmth

shattered

by a a fock of doves

taking refuge

in shady

rest.

His laugh:

endearing like the trinkets of young girls

the lisping of a shy child

sharp like a sword

hung on his brow

by tribal elders

straight

like a well-lit street

fenced in

by infinite

details

beautiful women

water

palm trees and pebbles

proud silver droplets

a sudden summer rain

on the wide ocean

of my gloom

I shake myself

like a wet bird

dispelling sorrow

driving away

sleep

and paint a face

splendid and proud

to rival yours

which finds its way into

the features of my heart

like a mount

with a rider

who knows this territory

His laugh:

commanding love,

war

words

governing

melodies

a laugh

trickling out in

all directions

like the spell of the blazing tree

Aowing

Ebbing

transforming into a sun

but not intending

to set

for very long
